Hello everyone,

As I am sure everyone has probably noticed by now that our website user registration and web log in have been disabled for several days now. I would like to reassure everyone that these were simply growing pains that we have experienced with our database and simply nothing else. Dave Coyle has spent the last few days reviewing and tweaking a lot of our Database queries and indexes and has converted our inventory tables on Danger grid to innodb, something we had planned to do at the last grid outage but simply ran out of time and decided it was better to put it off until we had the proper amount of time, and I am happy to say that the time is now. Our testing on danger grid has yielded some very positive results in terms of grid and website performance, unfortunately it requires us to take the grid down for approximately 24 hours to complete, might be less, might be more, we do not want to over promise anything at this point. So starting at 12:00PM Eastern Standard Time on January 27th 2011 we will be downing the grid to being this process. We will be providing updates as things progress via twitter, so if you are not already following us on twitter you may want to now @ http://twitter.com/osgrid. I would like to thank all of our grid testers and users for making these improvements possible.

There is also a new release I will be posting on the website today (OSgrid 0.7.1 (Dev) c472764: 2011-01-26). This version has several improvements towards avatar appearance and log ins, as well as improved Hypergriding and teleporting. Some of the changes i would like to specificially point out are in the OpenSim.ini itself, the changes are shown below:

lines 293-305

———————————————-

; Maximum outbound bytes per second for a single scene. This can be used to
; throttle total outbound UDP traffic for a simulator. The default value is
; 0, meaning no throttling at the scene level. The example given here is
; 20 megabits
;
scene_throttle_max_bps = 800000

; Maximum bits per second to send to any single client. This will override
; the user’s viewer preference settings. The default value is 0, meaning no
; aggregate throttling on clients (only per-category throttling). The
; example given here is 1.5 megabits
;
client_throttle_max_bps = 70000

———————————————-

lines 718:729

———————————————-

[PacketPool]
; Enables the experimental packet pool. Yes, we’ve been here before.
RecyclePackets = true;
RecycleDataBlocks = true;

[InterestManagement]
;# {UpdatePrioritizationScheme} {} {Update prioritization scheme?} {BestAvatarResponsiveness Time Distance SimpleAngularDistance FrontBack} BestAvatarResponsiveness
;; This section controls how state updates are prioritized for each client
;; Valid values are BestAvatarResponsiveness, Time, Distance,
;; SimpleAngularDistance, FrontBack
UpdatePrioritizationScheme = BestAvatarResponsiveness
ReprioritizationEnabled = true

———————————————-

These changes should have a profound effect on busier regions on the grid, it enables bandwidth throttles so no one person can suck away all your bandwith, as well as re-enables the previously disabled Update re-prioritization which lets the prims closest to your avatar rez 1st for a better experience. If you experience any issues with this update as usual please contact us on our web chat for assistance.

Thanks everyone and stay tuned!

When we announced that we would be closing Teen Second Life and bringing our under-18 Residents to the Main Grid, we also made clear our intention not to compromise the experience that teens have access to. Today, I’m happy share our plan to create rich and enjoyable Second Life experiences for teens, while keeping in mind their security and safety when joining the Main Grid.

A Rich and Secure Experience for Teens

Our goal is to provide a safe, secure, and rewarding experience to all Second Life Residents, no matter their age. Accordingly, we are putting safeguards in place on the Main Grid specific to the following teen age groups:

For 13- to 15-year-olds:

13- to 15-year-old Residents will be restricted to the estates of a sponsoring institution.

These Residents will not have access to inworld search or our Web-based Marketplace.

For 16- and 17-year-olds:

16- and 17-year-old Residents will have access to all SL regions rated General (i.e., containing content appropriate for all ages), on the Mainland and private islands.

These Residents will not be able to enter Moderate- nor Adult-rated regions, even if they have payment information on file and/or have used our Web-based identity verification system.

These Residents will be able to communicate fully with and befriend all other users on the Main Grid. This includes local chat and IM.

With nearly 5,000 General-rated regions in Second Life, the area that will be accessible to our 16- and 17-year-old Residents will dwarf the 100 regions currently available on Teen Second Life, giving them far more space to create, explore, and experience their online environment and what they can do there.

Our 16- and 17-year-old account holders will also be able to communicate fully with all other users on the Main Grid (unless they have been muted or otherwise restricted). This was an important decision for us, and one we think will make Second Life richer for all Residents.

Welcoming Teens in the New Year

Bringing teens to the Main Grid is now less than two months away. We plan to shut down the Teen Grid and transfer accounts to the Main Grid in early January, once the holidays have passed. Here’s what to expect:

When the teen grid closes, 13- to 15-year-olds will no longer be able to register for Second Life unless they are brought in through an affiliated organization. On the Main Grid, these younger Residents will not be able to travel outside the estates of their sponsoring organizations.

16- and 17-year-olds registering for Second Life will be directed to the Main Grid rather than to Teen Second Life.

We will transfer all 16-17s remaining on Teen SL to the main SL grid, as well as those 13-15s that are affiliated with TSL Resident institutions. This includes all the inventory of those accounts. (The accounts of our other 13- to 15-year-old Residents will become inactive, but will be automatically restored when they turn 16.) All of the land on Teen Second Life will be transferred to the Main Grid. This includes teen mainland, teen private islands, and teen organizations’ estates.

At that point, Teen Second Life will be officially closed — but the experience of teens in Second Life is only just beginning. We strongly believe that teens have as much to contribute to the Second Life community as their adult counterparts, and we do not want to restrict the flow of ideas and information between the two groups. We all have much to learn from each other.

As we continue to focus on making the Second Life experience faster, easier, and more fun for all Residents, we’ve also made a number of improvements to search to provide teens with additional security and control. We look forward to seeing the new kinds of creativity and community our teen Residents will bring to the Main Grid. Welcome, teens!

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to let everyone know that the updates are going well, things are taking a bit longer than we expected in converting some of our databases to innodb from myisam. We wanted to convert all of our databases to innodb, but it looks like its going to just take too long, we did however get about 50% of the tables converted so its a start, unfortunately if we were to convert the inventory table it would have taken at least another 24 hours and we felt that was just too much downtime for this outage. Things are late now for the OSgrid admins and we need to get some sleep, but we will be back early in the morning for a few more hours of work to bring the website and Robust service online. We would like to thank everyone for their patience and all the testing and reporting everyone has been doing. Keep checking back for more updates, we will post some more information soon when we are closer to bringing the grid back online, thanks again everyone.

It has been several weeks since we announced that Teen Second Life, our Second Life grid for 13- to 17-year-olds, will be closing at the end of this year, and that we would be admitting 16- and 17-year-olds to the main grid. Today, we are excited to tell you that we will be able to continue serving all of the educational and not-for-profit communities of the Teen Grid, including those that serve 13- to 15-year-olds, without an interruption in service.

Since our announcement, we’ve been speaking with many people from the educational and not-for-profit communities in Teen Second Life to better understand their needs and determine what measures would be necessary to create a safe, secure, and collaborative environment for their students and faculty. I’m happy to say that we are able to meet these needs, and allow 13- to 15-year-olds access to limited locations on the main grid, with appropriate controls for administrators. We will implement these controls and transfer these rich and exciting projects from Teen Second Life before the end of this year.

The 13- to 15-year-old students affiliated with these organizations will be unable to visit any regions except those of their hosting organization, and those accounts will not have the ability to search the Grid or to purchase items from the Marketplace. Unlike on Teen Second Life, adults that work with these students will now be a part of the broader Second Life experience, allowing them to bring rich educational content to their students. The ability to invite organization-approved guest speakers and other approved members of the community to safely interact these students will further enhance their learning experience. For more details, see the Teen Second Life transition wiki page.

We are happy to provide this support for the educational community in Second Life, and we look forward to the community continuing to create innovative and exciting projects!

Hello Everyone,

I am happy to announce that we have revived the places search this week, I would like to thank Andrew Hellershanks and Melanie Milland for helping us work out some last minute bugs to make to get things working smoothly with search. If you want to get your Region’s/Parcels listed in the places search you must download the latest OSgrid release (OSgrid OpenSimulator 0.6.9.post-fixes.116bcb2 – [zip] [22.4mb] 08-21-2010). Once you have updated your simulator software you will need to ensure that you have “Show Places in Search” box checked in the “About Land” panel on the Options tab. It might take a few hours for your regions to be indexed and for any changes you make to your parcel description after the initial indexing. Be sure to use key words that relate to what your region/parcel is offering, IE: if you offer freebies be sure to mention that in the parcel description on the About Land > General tab for each parcel you want listed. If you have any questions about getting your regions into the search index please join us on the Web Chat / IRC @ irc.freenode.net #osgrid and ask for some help.

It been a summer of major change here at the Lab and I wanted to give you a quick update on how we’re tackling a top priority–platform enhancements that improve grid performance.

An Introduction to HTTP Assets
Last week, we enabled grid-wide changes that represent an important first step towards more effectively managing asset requests out of the simulator path, and distributing certain assets (like textures) to an “edge” infrastructure (like a Content Distribution Network or CDN). Internally, the project is called HTTP Assets and includes a series of initiatives that are intended to optimize how we manage, distribute, and store assets on the grid to enable higher performance, reliability, and rez times.

The HTTP Assets implementation accomplished two important objectives. The first was to move texture requests from a UDP protocol format, to TCP. Using TCP, will increase reliability of proper receipt of those asset requests; UDP is not designed as a reliable messaging protocol and is used where dropping packets is preferred over the need to wait for all packets to arrive. The second was to reduce the need to have the simulator directly managing asset requests. In the past, the simulator would handle all requests from the viewer back into the inventory data bases and asset complex, then back to the viewer. Needless to say, this is not the most efficient or fastest way to deliver those assets to the viewer. Now, the simulator will only be queried to provide a redirect, so that the viewer can fetch the asset directly from a front end web proxy to the asset system servers. Ultimately, the simulator will be completely removed from this path and the viewer will be querying directly to the asset proxy server. If you got a little lost, here’s a visual of what the asset request process now looks like now, in two steps:

Step 1:

Step 2:

OK, So Why Does This Matter?
Well, from a performance standpoint (translation – lag), you should begin to see better texture download times. Reducing our dependency on the simulator for these requests and eventually directing them to a services layer will also improve the reliability of those requests. Keep your eyes for a blog post in a few weeks from Xan Linden, who runs the Systems Analysis team, that will quantify those performance improvements with hard data. He’s been a Linden for a long time and is a wealth of information on the history of our codebase and infrastructure.

One More Big Performance Improvement Now Available in Viewer 2.1
Here’s an interesting fact. Did you know that textures and objects represent about 90% of downloads to the Viewer? That means that any Viewer bugs that hamper the performance of textures and objects make a big difference when it comes to lag.

I have good news to report. We found and corrected a bug in the latest version of Viewer 2.1. (This particular bug has been present for a while and also exists in the 1.23 code base.) The bug was related to object retrieval, and was causing object requests to bypass the cache and constantly make requests for those objects to the asset system. Generally, most residents frequent the same regions, and the objects in those regions are cached locally so that they can be downloaded very quickly, improving overall rez time. It’s only when objects are changed (not very frequent), or when you visit different regions, that a request for objects are made back to the asset system. So, download Viewer 2.1 and you should notice an appreciable improvement in performance.

More Goodness on the Horizon
Soon, you’ll be hearing from Xan on performance data, Jack who will give us his perspective on HTTP textures from more of a product perspective, and also Vogt with an update from Support.

My team and I look forward to answering your questions and hearing if you feel the impact of our recent changes.

Hello everyone,

First, let me apologize for the grid downtime, for those who are not aware of whats happening, late on Sunday evening it came to our attention that a handful of peoples inventories were reset. Since we were not sure what was happening we immediately downed the grid in case bad things were still occurring. We began a database restore for comparison, but because of our current backup server configurations, ie. Software Raid, this machines ability to restore the database is amazingly slow. On another note some good news, this hardware is scheduled for this week to begin phase 1 of the hardware upgrade to fancy new high-power Hardware raid adapters, sadly this would have already been done a few weeks ago, but unfortunately we ordered the wrong 1u riser boards for our servers and the upgrade had to be rescheduled until we found the proper parts, not so easy!! anyway back to the real issue, because we found out so late about the issue on Sunday night, our volunteer staff tried to stay as long as we possibly could without being so tired that we would likely do more harm than good to the databases. So I again want to apologize to everyone that we could not stay up all night and fix the servers as quickly as we would like, but you can rest assured that we will be back early in the A.M. on Monday morning trying to make things as right as we can for everyone who is having issues. Until the database restore is complete we will not have any good explanation as to what really happened, but as soon as we do know i promise you all will know as well, Thank you for your understanding, it is a great pleasure to work with the great citizens of this grid, if you have any questions or would like to report you had inventory issues before the grid went down, please post on the following forum thread : [Grid Downtime Discussion]

Hi everyone. OSGrid is back online. We took advantage of the downtime today to do some grid maintenance we were originally going to schedule for a few weeks from now. We moved the database backend for the central grid services (except assets) to a new pair of db servers. Our backend dbs had grown so large, and the disks on the machine serving them were sufficiently slow, that running the backups would effectively take down the inventory server for up to an hour. So we had disabled the automatic, nightly db backups because they were causing inventory problems for users. But that meant we didn’t have automatic, nightly db backups anymore. We had to backup the dbs by hand when an admin was available to babysit the grid servers while it ran and kill the backup if they started causing problems.

The fallout from that is that the most recent inventory backup we have is from June 11. While it appears most users were unaffected by the inventory problems yesterday, some were. If your inventory is missing and you have an Inventory ARchive (IAR) you can just load it up in a region you’re in and your inventory will be restored. If you don’t have an IAR to restore from, we can restore your inventory to as it was the date of the most recent backup, June 11. We apologize for the inconvenience we know this will cause. To have your inventory restored from June 11, please send your full avatar name via email to info@osgrid.org. Depending on the number of people affected this may take us a day or two to complete the restoration for them.

The good news is now that we’ve migrated our db services to a new pair of hosts, we’re able, and have already started, making multiple db backups per day. This will allow us to minimize impact from any sort of catastrophic failure in the future, and help us to recover more quickly.

It’s not clear at this point what caused the inventory erasure for some users, but we may never really know the answer. OpenSim is still alpha quality software, and unexpected things can and will happen. That’s not to say we couldn’t have done a better job with backups; because OSGrid is 100% donation driving we try to be as thrifty as possible, but in this case we should’ve spent the money earlier when we disabled automatic backups to quickly get us to a place where we could turn them back on. But today we have the benefit of hindsight.

We apologize for the downtime and for the inventory troubles for those affected, thank you for your patience, and thank you for using OSGrid.

-Dave
