Hello everyone,

I have posted a new version of OSgrid Simulator release on the website today, there are some important changes that you should be aware of before upgrading to make sure you retain 100% functionality.

The main changes are to the GridCommon.ini and the OpenSim.ini. the following section needs to be added, see the link for fully updated GridCommon.ini and OpenSim.ini

GridCommon.ini Changes
———————————————–

[GridInfo]
   ;
   ; Change this to your grid info service
   ;
   GridInfoURI = "http://hg.osgrid.org:80"

———————————————–

The above changes to GridCommon.ini are not required, this is a new addition to the OSgrid GridCommon.ini and what it does is allow the following OSSL functions osGetGridName, osGetGridNick, osGetGridLoginURI to function as intended in grid mode. This section goes below the [InventoryService] section and just above the [GridService] sections.

The changes to the OpenSim.ini are also not required I have simply just brought the OSgrid release OpenSim.ini to be inline with the Core OpenSimulator OpenSim.ini.example file so that we can provide the best level of support to the core development team in terms of debugging. While these changes are not required we do recommend you take the time to bring your configurations up to date to insure you are getting the maximum compatibility from this and future OpenSimulator releases.

If you have any questions or need help with this update please join us on our IRC chat channel at irc.freenode.net #osgrid or you can use the web chat

Good luck everyone,
Michael Emory Cerquoni

Hello Everyone,
This new release now has an UPDATED cap enabled for Inventory over HTTP for v2 and v3 viewers and requires changes to your OpenSim.ini :

Replace the following section

—————————————

[ClientStack.LindenCaps]
    ;; For the long list of capabilities, see OpenSimDefaults.ini
    ;; Here are the few ones you may want to change. Possible values
    ;; are:
    ;;   "" -- empty, capability disabled
    ;; "localhost" -- capability enabled and served by the simulator
    ;; "" -- capability enabled and served by some other server
    ;;
    ; These are enabled by default to localhost. Change if you see fit.

    Cap_WebFetchInventoryDescendents = "localhost"

Hello everyone,

I have posted a new version of OSgrid Simulator release on the website today, there are some important changes that you should be aware of before upgrading to make sure you retain 100% functionality.

The main changes are to the GridCommon.ini and the OpenSim.ini. the follow section needs to be updated, see the link for fully updated GridCommon.ini and OpenSim.ini

OpenSim.ini Changes
———————————————–

[RegionReady]
    ; Enable this module to get notified once all items and scripts in the region have been completely loaded and compiled
    ; default is false
    enabled = true

    ; Channel on which to signal region readiness through a message
    ; formatted as follows: "{server_startup|oar_file_load},{0|1},n,[oar error]"
    ; - the first field indicating whether this is an initial server startup
    ; - the second field is a number indicating whether the OAR file loaded ok (1 == ok, 0 == error)
    ; - the third field is a number indicating how many scripts failed to compile
    ; - "oar error" if supplied, provides the error message from the OAR load
    channel_notify = -800
    ; - disallow logins while scripts are loading
    login_disable = true
    ; - send an alert as json to a service
    ; alert_uri = "http://myappserver.net/my_handler/"

———————————————–

The above changes to OpenSim.ini are not required, this is a new addition to the OSgrid OpenSim.ini and what it does is disables the ability for users to log into your simulator until scripts are completely loaded, this can improve performance especially after a sim crash when everyone is clamoring to log back into your sim which can result in a simulator crash if scripts are still starting up, again this is not a required update be we highly recommend you add this to your configuration for best performance.

GridCommon.ini Changes
———————————————–

[MapImageService]
   	MapImageServerURI = "http://maptiles.osgrid.org:80"

———————————————–

The above changes to GridCommon.ini are required for users who wish to use the Linden Lab v2 or TPV based V2 Viewers so you can see map tiles on the in world map system, you will only be able to see tiles on regions that have been upgraded and have added this variable to their GridCommon.ini file. So please do not panic when you do not see a full map it will likely take a few weeks for everyone to take notice of these changes and get their simulators fully updated. If you see your neighbors have not updated yet and you know how to reach them please let them know it is time to update.

If you have any questions or need help with this update please join us on our IRC chat channel at irc.freenode.net #osgrid or you can use the web chat

Good luck everyone,

Hello everyone,

I have posted a new version of OSgrid Simulator release on the website today, there are some important changes that you should be aware of before upgrading to make sure you retain 100% functionality.

The main changes are to the GridCommon.ini the follow sections need to be added see the link for fully updated GridCommon.ini

———————————————–

[UserAgentService]
    ;
    ; === HG ONLY ===
    ; Change this to your user agent server (HG robust)
    ;
    UserAgentServerURI = "http://hg.osgrid.org:80"

[Messaging]
    ; === HG ONLY ===
    ;; change this to the address of your Gatekeeper service
    ;; (usually bundled with the rest of the services in one
    ;; Robust server in port 8002, but not always)
    Gatekeeper = "http://hg.osgrid.org:80"

[Profile]
    ; Change it to your own HTTP server to have the Profile server work
    Module = "OpenProfileModule"
    ProfileURL = http://profiles.osgrid.org/profile.php

———————————————–

You should also remove the [Profile] section from your OpenSim.ini as it is now been moved into the GridCommon.ini as you can see above, this is not mandatory but will cause less confusion later.

These are the only changes to the ini files that you need to make for this update. The update will facilitate the ability to friend HG visitors you will be able to send them IM’s and Inventory.

If you have any questions or run into any issues during this upgrade please visit us on our IRC support channel at irc.freenode.net #osgrid or use our web chat.

Good Luck everyone.

Hello everyone,

There are some new .ini changes in the 04-07-2011 release for osgrid (http://www.osgrid.org/index.php/downloads)

The first change is in the GridCommon.ini are as follows, in the [GridService] section

[GridService]
    ;
    ; change this to your grid-wide grid server
    ;
    GridServerURI = "http://grid.osgrid.org"
    AllowHypergridMapSearch = true

    ;; Directory for map tile images of linked regions
    MapTileDirectory = "./maptiles"

    ; === HG ONLY ===
	;; change this to the address of your Gatekeeper service
	;; (usually bundled with the rest of the services in one
	;; Robust server in port 8002, but not always)
	Gatekeeper="http://hg.osgrid.org:80"

The changes to this section will prevent automatic hyperlinks from being created on map searches for hypergrid enabled regions, this was causing issues with all map searches that took place after the initial search and all caused all subsequent teleports within the grid to region with the same name as the automatic linking to fail.

The next changes are to the OpenSim.ini and were recommended to me by Mic Bowman from Intel Labs, Intel has been doing exhaustive testing and submitting patches to opensimulator project that should improve networking performance considerably, I have been doing some testing and things are looking very good, some major improvements. These patches are still not in the core branch and are not quite ready for everyone just yet, but these .ini changes to OpenSim.ini can be used now and we would like everyone to update and give them a try, please let me know right away if you see any improvements or declines in performance after these changes, they are not required but the testing I have done so far seems to show some improvements overall, all the OSgrid Plazas have been running them for the past week or so and everything seems quite normal. The new section is listed below:

[ClientStack.LindenUDP]
    ;; See OpensSimDefaults.ini for the throttle options. You can copy the
    ;; relevant sections and override them here.
    ;; DO NOT MODIFY OpenSimDefaults.ini, as your changes would be lost
    ;; with the next update!

    async_packet_handling = true

    ; The client socket receive buffer size determines how many
    ; incoming requests we can process; the default on .NET is 8192
    ; which is about 2 4k-sized UDP datagrams. On mono this is
    ; whatever the underlying operating system has as default; for
    ; example, ubuntu 8.04 or SLES11 have about 111k, which is about
    ; 27 4k-sized UDP datagrams (on linux platforms you can [as root]
    ; do "sysctl net.core.rmem_default" to find out what your system
    ; uses a default socket receive buffer size.
    ;
    ; client_socket_rcvbuf_size allows you to specify the receive
    ; buffer size LLUDPServer should use. NOTE: this will be limited
    ; by the system's settings for the maximum client receive buffer
    ; size (on linux systems you can set that with "sysctl -w
    ; net.core.rmem_max=X")
    ;
    client_socket_rcvbuf_size = 8388608

    ; Maximum outbound bytes per second for a single scene. This can be used to
    ; throttle total outbound UDP traffic for a simulator. The default value is
    ; 0, meaning no throttling at the scene level. The example given here is
    ; 20 megabits
    ;
    scene_throttle_max_bps = 800000

    ; Maximum bits per second to send to any single client. This will override
    ; the user's viewer preference settings. The default value is 0, meaning no
    ; aggregate throttling on clients (only per-category throttling). The
    ; example given here is 1.5 megabits
    ;
    client_throttle_max_bps = 100000

    ; Per-client bytes per second rates for the various throttle categories.
    ; These are default values that will be overriden by clients
    ;
    resend_default = 10000
    land_default = 10000
    wind_default = 10000
    cloud_default = 10000
    task_default = 10000
    texture_default = 20000
    asset_default = 20000
    state_default = 10000

    ; Per-client maximum burst rates in bytes per second for the various
    ; throttle categories. These are default values that will be overriden by
    ; clients
    ;
    resend_limit = 18750
    land_limit = 29750
    wind_limit = 18750
    cloud_limit = 18750
    task_limit = 18750
    texture_limit = 55750
    asset_limit = 27500
    state_limit = 37000

    ; Configures how ObjectUpdates are aggregated. These numbers
    ; do not literally mean how many updates will be put in each
    ; packet that goes over the wire, as packets are
    ; automatically split on a 1400 byte boundary. These control
    ; the balance between responsiveness of interest list updates
    ; and total throughput. Higher numbers will ensure more full-
    ; sized packets and faster sending of data, but more delay in
    ; updating interest lists
    ;
    ;PrimUpdatesPerCallback = 100

    ; TextureSendLimit determines how many packets will be put on
    ; the outgoing queue each cycle. Like the settings above, this
    ; is a balance between responsiveness to priority updates and
    ; total throughput. Higher numbers will give a better
    ; throughput at the cost of reduced responsiveness to client
    ; priority changes or transfer aborts
    ;
    ;TextureSendLimit = 20

    ; Quash and remove any light properties from attachments not on the
    ; hands. This allows flashlights and lanterns to function, but kills
    ; silly vanity "Facelights" dead. Sorry, head mounted miner's lamps
    ; will also be affected.
    ;
    ;DisableFacelights = "false"

A few other notable changes with this release are that you can now take Coalesced objects, meaning you can actually take multi-prim objects without linking them and have them be one object in your inventory, please note that if your region is hypergrid enabled this function does not work yet, but we do hope to address this issue soon, you can however rez coalesced objects in hypergrid enabled regions, you can just not take them yet. Next notable thing is that Justin Clark-Casey has fixed sqlite for mac users, you no longer need to use the legacy driver for Mac OSX. here are the notes from Justin’s fix:

Bundle a built-from-source Mac OS X sqlite3 universal dylib with OpenSim and use this instead of the system one.

This means that Mac OS X users can now use the standard sqlite adaptor instead of the legacy one.
This is SQLite 3.7.5. I configured the build with the line

CFLAGS="-Os -g -isysroot /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.6.sdk -arch i386 -arch x86_64 -arch ppc7400 -DSQLITE_ENABLE_COLUMN_METADATA" LDFLAGS="-arch i386 -arch x86_64 -arch ppc7400" ./configure --disable-dependency-tracking

The SQLITE_ENABLE_COLUMN_METADATA flag exports the metadata symbols that modern Mono SQLite adaptors need.
The -Os removes debugging symbols (as per the sqlite3 source pkg README)
The other parts are to cross compile for x86_64, i386 and ppc. On Mac OS X, Mono can actually only P/INVOKE 32-bit libraries even on 64 bit platforms so i386 is being used. The dylib has not been tested on ppc.

Please note I have not been able to test the new sqlite adapter for Mac OSX as I do not have the proper equipment, if you do get a chance to test it please report how it went.

Thanks everyone, if you have any questions about these changes or would like to report any changes in performance you see please visit our IRC channel on freenode (irc.freenode.net) on #osgrid or click here for our webchat. Thank you everyone and good luck.

Hello everyone,

I have just created a new release for OSgrid OpenSimulator v0.7.x (0.7.1.cd4d7a7). I must stress though NO ONE SHOULD BE UPGRADING YET!!!!! This pre-release is so everyone can prep their regions and get a feel for the upcoming ini changes and differences for their automated upgrade processes. I have written some instructions for everyone to follow that will hopefully minimize problems during the upgrade process and they are available at the following links:

Plain Text Instructions : http://upgrade.osgrid.org/README.txt

Pretty HTML Instructions : http://upgrade.osgrid.org/README.htm

you can also inspect all the individual components that go into a release here http://upgrade.osgrid.org

Again no one should try to perform an upgrade until we announce its time to pull the trigger, then everyone can move forward, this will likely be sometime Late on Sunday Night or Early Monday Morning (Eastern/US Time) so please keep checking back for updates. You can also join us on our IRC channel #osgrid at irc.freenode.net or click here http://upgrade.osgrid.org/chat-help.htm if you have any questions or need guidance.

Remember when I said we were looking to start quickly? Well, the first RC channel is going to be updated tomorrow! Here’s the plan:

2010-09-13 7:00a SLT: Roll update to Release Candidate “BlueSteel”

The details of what’s going into this RC are here, but it’s mostly just server crash fixes that, in the old days, would have gone out as 1.42.1. I’d like to keep the first iteration of this process simple!

Moving forward we will have up to 3 Release Candidate channels (where “channel” just means a group of regions) on Agni: BlueSteel, Magnum, and LeTigre. Those links will be updated with current information about what’s running on them. For the first few releases we’ll only be using BlueSteel, but by next month or so all 3 will be up and running.

Some preemptive Q&A:

How do I know if I’m in an RC channel?

Go to the “Help” -> “About Second Life” menu. Information about your region & simulator host are listed, including channel and version (example). If you see something like: “Second Life RC BlueSteel 10.9.10.209431″ then you’re in it!

Where can I go to try out a Release Candidate if I’m not already in one?

We have setup 4 sandboxes for each Release Candidate so that everyone can try out the features in them. Go to the RC-specific wiki pages (linked above) for the SLURL. As mentioned in the wiki, you will need to join the Beta group to visit these regions.

Can I volunteer my region to be in an RC channel?

Sure! Use this wiki page. To make the shuffling of thousands of regions into RC channels easier, I am only using mainland regions right now. In time, I will pull from that page and include those that wanted to be in the old style pilots.

Also, I’m going to try leaving comments open here instead of duplicating this info on the forums. If this is worse for anyone, please let me know.

We had a small release last week and have been fine-tuning performance in preparation for our next release. Improving performance is a major concern of ours and if you haven’t yet, please download the latest Viewer. Search performance depends, in part, on Viewer performance and every Viewer release improves Search performance.

Just released!

You may have already noticed this additional option appear on your in-viewer Search last week. If not, check it out! You now have the option to browse events straight from the Find window in Viewer 2.

Some features of note:

1) Featured
The editorial team at Linden has stumbled across a few events we wanted to bring your attention to, so we’ve included one of their selections up top. If you have an event worthy of notice, please send in your suggestions!

2) Choose a date
By default, you’ll see events listed starting with the top of the current hour. If you’re planning ahead, we have a convenient drop-down calendar for you to choose another date.

Browse by interest
3) You also have the option to simply select an Event category. We’re looking to expand categories as well and we welcome your suggestions.

Additional fixes included:

Performance tweaks

Teleport not triggered for specific locations in viewer search

Changes to filtered words (Which included this fix WEB-2023)

Multiple repeat Destination guide entries on web search

Profiles missing images

Release next week!

The fix for WEB-2378, finally, is coming along with a number of tweaks to the world pages, like visible html tags, table misalignment, classifieds tracking, and broken group links. Also coming next week, is an updated FAQ with additional information on how Search works, including suggestions for all of you who would like to appear higher in listings for your keywords.

We’re working hard to increase the frequency of releases and enable the Search team to deploy when needed in order to fix bugs in a more timely manner. Thanks for your ongoing patience and understanding.

On a related note, thank you to everyone who is talking about Search publicly, in social media, comments, and in forums everywhere. It’s a tremendous resource and we value your input highly. Please keep it up!

We intended to have a Search release incorporating a number of improvements in June. We did have one, sort of. During the release, we became aware, both internally and through Jira, that we had another scenario to take into consideration. So, we made the decision to roll back the release. Since then, we have fixed the Jira issue, dealt with the performance implications, and made some high-value additions to the release.

Our main focus for this next release is getting rid of our legacy Search system, one that has been patched, updated, and added to for years. We’re replacing it with a new, faster, more dependable way of generating the Search indices. In short, it will be significantly improved. In addition, we wanted to tackle the two main issues we highlighted in the last post. Namely, a significant bug that caused us to drop parcels and secondary information that was causing bad Search results. It’s this second point I’d like to expand on a bit here, before our next release is out.

The Association Problem
When I first joined the lab in December, I was made aware of a report from a resident land owner whose region was somehow associated with the word “Nazi” in Search. There were no WWII role-playing events and no German history groups associated with his land, so he was justifiably unhappy about this. After investigating thoroughly, we narrowed it down to a picks problem. Some Residents, a literary group inworld, who had chosen his place as a pick had phrases like “grammar nazi” in their profiles. We contacted the 2-3 Residents about the issue and asked them to change their descriptions or delete this particular pick. Unfortunately this didn’t solve the problem because the GSA had “learned” that his region had something to do with Nazis. It took our GSA6 upgrade and fresh Search indices for this problem to finally go away. This is one of many examples; we’ve heard from several Residents citing their own favourite examples of this issue.

More Picks Issues
Aside from these accidental association issues, we have three main other issues with the picks data in Search. First, some enterprising individuals have actually created businesses based on paying people to influence Search with picks. Second, Residents have been using picks to highlight those they care about, their friends and family in Second Life, rather than just places. I think it’s nice to call out your important relationships in a public way, it’s just not good data for Search. Third, places frequently come and go in Second Life and many picks are outdated. There are those who like to keep a pick of a former favourite spot as a memory, but often, people simply don’t realize that their pick isn’t accurate. In either case, it’s more bad data from the search perspective.

These cases add to the problem of using picks data in Search and chasing the consequences of these issues as they come up is a time-consuming pursuit that doesn’t actually address the core issue. Though we think picks can be valuable information on important inworld spaces, right now, picks are a problem in Search.

We’ll continue to test different and better ways of using picks information, but for now, starting with this upcoming release, picks are no longer included in Search relevancy. They will still be visible in resident profiles in the viewer, but they won’t affect Search until we find a better way to use that information and add value to Search. We do appreciate the value of picks, but when we do include them again we want to be sure it adds to the relevancy rather than making it worse.

I look forward to writing more this week about the rest of the improvements included in the upcoming release!

Following on from the previous blog post discussing the work we’re doing to fix search – today we’re happy to announce the full release of our fixes and improvements.

Perhaps the most important part of today’s release is the fix for the bug that was causing some parcels to be dropped from the search index The fix involved replacing legacy components of the Search system which has had the added benefit of greatly improving the speed at which the Search index gets updated. In other words, changes you make will be reflected by Search much more rapidly! This new system also brings us the increased dependability and consistency we need for Search.

Index Generation

Until this week, updates could take 72-96 hours to fully propagate in Search.

This meant that new parcels and regions would take a while to show up in Search and merchants editing their search listings were not able to monitor their changes in a timely fashion. By comparison the new system updates in under 12 hours! (Plus, we plan to cut that in half in the upcoming weeks!)

Spam

Also in this release are improved methods to deal with Search spam, starting with keyword stuffing (using large numbers of words, often the same or very similar and often not related to the location itself). You should therefore notice that fewer of the top ranking results will look like they were written solely to game the rankings. Increasingly, if you add excessive numbers of keywords this may count against your ranking. Try to use fewer and more accurate keywords, including key phrases, to increase your relevance. If you would like to refresh your memory on best practices, please read our guidelines.

More Improvements ahead

We’ve had reports that the current maturity filter does not prevent all adult content from being shown only to Residents who’ve asked for adult content. Our next projects include ensuring that the maturity filters work the way our Residents expect them to, across search results, classifieds, and events. We have also heard from people who would like to be able to browse certain types of content and restrict their search to specific collections before they search. Although we don’t like the idea of showing empty Search pages to Searchers, we love the idea of having browsable collection options available to everyone who launches Search. So, we’ll be designing and testing options for that, too!

Please note: that during this first release of the new system, it could take up to 48 hours for the index to be fully populated.
